            Abstract

Osteoarthritis is a chronical disease, characterised by degradation of the articular cartilage and subchondral bone, the symptoms are joint pain, loss of the knee function and movement.

Knee osteoarthritis is one of the most common localisation of arthritis, is a cause of pain and disability and in advanced stages required high social and medical costs.

The purpose of this study is to show the importance of kinetotherapy in improvement of the symptomes and the disfunction to the pacients diagnosed with knee ostaoarthritis.

            Material and methods

I included 100 pacients in the study diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis in II-III stages Kellgren-Lawrence. Pacients were randomly assigned to group A (50) and group B (50).

The first lot followed just pain medication, electrotherapy, termotherapy and massage and group B contain 50 pacients, which followed: pain medication, electrotherapy, termotherapy, massage and additional kinetotherapy. The study was performed during 1 October 2011 to 1 April 2012. Pain was evaluated on a visual analogue scale (VAS), WOMAC scale before treatment, at three weeks and six months follow-up.

            Results and discussion

In both lots I have noted a very good evolution at the end of the treatment, at three weeks follow-up with an significant improvement (p<0.001), while significant improvement for pain and life quality was noted just in the lot B at six months follow-up.

            Conclusions

WOMAC and VAS scale may be used succesfully for evaluation the efficency of the kinetic program to the pacients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis.

It is necessary to continue the kinetic program at home for maintaing the functional independance and improvement the quality of life. The kinetic treatment has an significant improvement for pain and quality of life on a long term.
